Provence Cane / Arundo Donax, from weed to valued material.

Six months have already passed since the 23rd of November 2011 (when the Agora prize was awarded), or, one and a half times the duration necessary for Provence cane to achieve its maximum height.
This was also the same amount of time that it took me to meet three Provence cane producers, two reed makers, and one reed fence maker, to visit their factories and/or workshops, to undertake my first cane harvest, to design and produce a stabile sculpture out of Provence cane (measuring five metres long and one metre twenty centimetres wide), a first light fitting, the model for a future boat, further samples, and to design other objects yet to come.

In order to present this first stage of my research and development, I will hold an exhibition in my workshop, in Hyères, during Design Parade, from the 29th of June, until the 1st of July. This “draft” stage will therefore represent the first major event following the two previous years of research. It may only appear to be a resource centre for materials, a cabinet case of curiosities, a loft for cane and its products, a pile of shavings... But these are just some of the many clues which hint at the objects, the furniture, and the materials to come.
The exhibition will consist of showing my ongoing development, rather than any finished products.
What could be more normal for the Atelier Saint-Bernard (the former gardener’s house at the villa Noailles), than to present a study on a plant which, furthermore, grows in the local Varois marshes. From the living grass to the raw material, from an object to an architecture, I will endeavour to narrate the evolution of this research.
