DP03: the contest !

Atmosphere…of a design festival

Thursday 10 July 2008

A festival is a special atmosphere… You have theater festivals, dance festivals, festivals of music of all kinds but also in festivals etc… live performances are keen on generating festivals. For art and design… you have biennales or symposiums… That’s why we decide to make a festival about design… to make it lively and joyful !

In order that young designers could be welcomed in their field by professionnals around them for 3 day,

In order to share together conferences, funny moments, exhibitions,

In order to make a modern house stay alive because it was built for an artistic purpose, to make life as a festival of surprising moments…

Let’s enjoy…

The Seb prize this Hyères !

Thursday 12 June 2008

To start off the Seb Prize competition this year, the eight selected designers met the Seb design studio in Paris, La Défense on the 6th of june 08.

View from the bridge before entering the Seb buildings, June 6, 9:25 AM

The brief began around 9:30 and the brand image policy was explained to the designers by Guillaume Reiner design manager at Seb. But perhaps more interesting for them, the discussion really took place around examples like the fryer without oil or the Delo Lindo lines where ideas and innovations were mixed. All the designers arrived to the conclusion that the project should be more a prospective one than a deeply technical one because of the time they have left which encourages to develop a story and its result in volume.

WHAT PROJECT ARE THEY WORKING ON ?

The topic is to “give a favourite household appliance a new design.”

They have then 10 days to conceive a new product from the choice they made of a little household appliance they have alwaus known. Between June, 20 and July, 1st, the 8 projects are going to be prototyped by Seb. The jury is to award the winner who will receive from Seb 10,000 euros.

Julien Carretero from Eindhoven and Stéphane Barbier Bouvet from Lausanne choose a fan.

Michel Charlot from Lausanne choose a yogurt machine.

Alexandra Gerber form Strasbourg chose a ricecooker.

Constance Guisset from Paris chose a blender.

Maria Jeglinska from Munich chose a hair dryer.

Joachim Jirou Najou from Paris chose an electric juicer.

What did Bruno and Manuel from Lisbon and Eindhoven choose ? (we can’t find the image right now…)

What is the Group Seb Design Award ?

Monday 9 June 2008

The Seb prize is a unique opportunity given to the designers in competition for Design PARADE to take part in a special project in partnership with the Seb group, world leader for small household equipment.

Here is how it goes:

The designers start by choosing a small electronical equipment that they are familiar with, with which they have been living with for a long time and enjoy… The next step is a meeting with the design studio from Seb. From that time on, the designers have three weeks to conceive and re-design their product working with a designer from Seb. The project is then prototyped and exhibited at the villa for the festival and the jury to discover. The Seb Prize is a 10 000 €

grant.

6th july 07 : The Young designers are discussing with Frederic Beuvry, Seb Head Design Department , Jean-Pierre Blanc and Catherine Geel , general curators of DP, in the villa ’s gardens, the day before their presentation.

Here is a look at some of the last year’s projects

Nacho Carbonell Ivars from Eindhoven won the Seb Prize for DP02. His project was chosen by the jury lead by Hella Jongerius. The idea is an electrical kettle that reacts to the water becoming hot by display on its body the word “Hot, Hot, Hot”. The black model was done by Nacho with a thermoreactive envelop and the white one is the model made by Seb.

check out Nacho’s web site here.

Sylvain Rieu-Piquet from Paris. A quite delicate shape with which Sylvain pays attention to the way we handle such a kettle

This amazing crazy shape comes originally from a fan but was radically changed by Alice Wang from London . It is a polinasator (!!!!) that helps plants to fertilize. Little propelers are hidden in each end of this strange closed ombrella.

check out Alice’s web site here.

Cyril Afsa from Paris worked on the different ways to cook waffles and thinks of a new design for them. The thinner the groove in the mould the more your waffles are cooked. The user is free to choose the quality and level of toasting by changing grids.

Sebastien Cordoléani and Franck Fontana from Barcelona thought of a pocket hairdryer. Its plug and wire are incorporated in the object’s body which revolvs in order to become a handle.

Bénédicte Meynet from Lausanne, worked on a special scale for teenagers with weight problems. The feet of the person on the plateform leave a green footprint if the result is good and a pink one if it doesn’t match the registered average weight.

Nadine Sterk’s kettle, from Eindhoven. A quite refined project with mixed references evocating on one side the ancient chinese teapots and on the other side modern technical devices on its base.

check out Nadine’s web site here.

Jim Rokos from London conceived a toaster that proposes an alternative method to raise toast. Bread is balanced in the toaster on a pivot. As the bread becomes toast, it looses 5g of weight (water content), and the bread tips out.

See for yourself in these videos !

Benjamin Graindorge from Paris, Machin&Machin (Jérôme Garzon et Fred Sionis) from Paris also conceived items: a humidifier that works with special water and a mechanical beater for Benjamin.

Jury at work !

Sunday 4 May 2008

The DP03 jury met on May 10th in Paris to select 8 candidates for the young designers’ contest. This year our jury is composed of the following members:

Konstantin Grcic, president of the jury, one of the most well known international designers of today. His sharp vision and consciousness of design is for us a very important point which he will bring to the jury’s debate.

Marie Claude Beaud is the head of the MUDAM, Luxembourg. She was previously the head of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and of the Fondation Cartier. She has always had an eye on design !

Walter Bettens, co-editor of DAMn° magazine, Brussels. For us DAMn° is one of the most interesting magazines on the subject for it is not only a magazine on products but on how designs interacts with other fields.

Pierre Charpin, one of today’s french designers whose process is the most rigorous.

Pierre Doze, a smart design critic with a large culture and a very specific point of view which we appreciate.

Sébastien Cordoléani and Franck Fontana, winners of last year’s DP02 Grand Prix. They work in Barcelona and they are also preparing an exhibition at the Villa.

David Dubois, is a designer very close to the Villa for which he often does scenographies, such as Document 5 this year. He has just completed the re-design of one of the Villa’s rooms for the Rooms with a view exhibition.

Alice Morgaine is curently the head of La Verrière, Hermès’ gallery in Brussels. She was also the founder of Jardin des Modes, a very famous magazine supporting young designers in all fields. Her eye is still one of the best !

Ineke Hans is part of the dutch design scene. She goes from self-edition with her own company to working for companies such as Cappelini. Therefore, she adopts a very accurate point of view on design and her experiences will be a strong help whithin the jury.

Michel Roset is the head manager of Ligne Roset and Cinna. He pays extra attention to young designers and doesn’t hesitate to produce them. With his great awareness of market realities, he will consider the selection in a business perspective.

Jerszy Seymour, the Berlin based designer is involved in design in two specific directions: mass market products with Magis and Moulinex, for example, and very radical research projects on the other side. His particular perspective is a precious one for us.
