We are very honoured to welcome in the Tour des Templiers at 3′ from the villa by feet, the reconstitution of the Superarchitettura exhibition internationally considered as the manifesto of Radical Italian Design, which found its inspiration in the clubbing atmosphere of the Piper in Rome, the Beatles and British pop-art.

In celebration of its 50th anniversary, Poltrovona has decided to recreate the extraordinary space of « Superarchitettura », the creative energy booster of its time, created by the visionary talents of the « wonder children » of Italian design at Archizoom and Superstudio.

Context

Florence after the flash flood.

On December 4, 1966, one month after the flash flood in Florence, Archizoom and Superstudio organized the « Superarchittetura » exhibit at the Jolly 2 Gallery in Pistoia.

The members of both groups produced vividly colored prototypes that were exhibited by « Superarchitettura ». The pieces generated such masterpieces as Superonda and Sofo, and later, two lamps, Passiflora and Gherp, all produced by Poltrovona. They also contributed to a new approach to the art of living and to the “home landscape”

Archizoom and Superstudio

Both groups are from Florence. Archizoom was created by Andrea Branzi, Gilberto Corretti, Paolo Deganello and Massimo Morrozzi. Superstudio was created by Adolfo Natalini, Cristiano Toraldo di Francia, Roberto Magris, Piero Frassellini and Alessandro Magris. The actual dates are not specified, but it is fair to say that these groups formalized their production for, during or just after the Pistoia exhibit (a second exhibit, Superarchitettura 2, was organized in the same place in 1967). Andrea Branzi and his teams played with the connection and the onomatopoeic and poetic reference to Archigram (a British group of architects from the early ‘

60s), while Natalini chose the name Superstudio as the logical response to the title of the exhibit and the supporting manifesto.

Reconstruction

The coordination and organization of the exhibit were conducted by Centro Studi Poltronova with the support of the philologist and architect Gilberto Corretti (from Archizoom)…

…. buoyed by the enthusiasm and cooperation of the creators and by the formidable talent of the Centro Studi teams.

In their reconstruction of the installation, the teams worked with contemporary pictures and analyzed photogrammetric parameters to reproduce blueprints. They in fact rebuilt the project scale on the basis of such architectural details as the size of the tiles where the objects were placed.

We can now relive the enthusiastic and colorful experience that was so typical of Florence in 1966.
