Orianne Lopes presents Les Mélanies, a work reflecting her thoughts about the representation of the black female body in white visual culture.
In choosing a quirky, parodical point of view, she aims to challenge the image of African women and the aesthetic and sexual stigmatization surrounding them. Trivializations seen in both ethnographic photography of the colonial period and in contemporary erotic images are turned around and re-interpreted. By working with the typical plan of a studio portraitist, she re-explores and questions stereotypes.
French born Orianne Lopes is a graduate from the Ecole Cantonale d’Art de Lausanne (ECAL). Her work features in the book Beauty work : A laboratory for photography students - Daegu, Lausanne, New York, curated by Nathalie Herschdorfer, published at Steidl.
